The Division of City Schools in the City of Naga, Cebu has a remarkable journey that began on July 24, 2006, through the enactment of Republic Act 2006. Initially established as an interim Schools Division of the DepEd SDO Cebu Province, the office was situated at the Ecology Center in West Poblacion, City of Naga, Cebu, under the guidance of the competent and esteemed Schools Division Superintendent, Dr. Caridad C. Labe.

The Department of Education (DepEd) – City of Naga, located just 700 meters away from N. Bacalso S. National Highway and approximately 21.3 kilometers from Cebu City, was born out of the necessity to meet the requirements of the cityhood of Naga in 2008. In its early days, the division relied on funding from the Division of Cebu Province to support its operations and initiatives. Public Schools District Supervisors and School Principals were assigned to the Division Office to fulfill various roles, including Education Program Supervisors and other non-teaching positions. The dedication and hard work of these individuals laid the foundation for the growth and development of the Division steered towards the direction of excellence.

A significant turning point came in 2015 when the DepEd – City of Naga transitioned into an implementing Schools Division Office, acquiring an agency code that enabled it to independently finance its programs, projects, and activities. This shift marked a new era of self-sufficiency and autonomy for the Division, empowering it to better serve the educational needs of the City of Naga, Cebu to its teaching and non-teaching personnel, learners, and internal and external stakeholders.

In 2015, a momentous milestone was reached with the implementation of the Rationalization Plan within DepEd. This led to the allocation of Plantilla items for related teaching and non-teaching positions within the Schools Division Office (SDO) of the City of Naga, Cebu. This development further strengthened the organizational structure and capacity of the Division allowing the acquisition and placement of empowered and proficient personnel who are focused on the delivery and attainment of their jobs and outputs without the burden of ancillary tasks that come with mere designations.

DepEd – City of Naga, Cebu achieved independence as a separate entity from its parent organization, the DepEd SDO Cebu Province, in 2016. This transition marked a new chapter in the Division’s journey towards providing quality education and support to the schools and communities within the City of Naga, Cebu.

In 2022, 14 years after its establishment, DepEd – City of Naga is the home to 1,278 personnel, and the principal support edifice of the 28 elementary schools, 23 junior high schools, and 17 senior high schools to which 16 are extension to junior high schools and one is a standalone senior high institution. Furthermore, it oversees, regulates, and provides technical assistance to eight (8) private schools.

As promulgated under Republic Act 9155, DepEd- City of Naga has diligently performed its duties and responsibilities to ensure that learners in the city have access to quality education. The implementation of programs, projects, and activities has improved and furthered learners’ abilities while also empowering teachers to prepare these learners to be contributing members of society. The successful implementation and execution of the said projects, programs, and activities have resulted to the excellent performance of learners and teachers in school as well as in various competitions in the regional and national levels.

DepEd- City of Naga has established partnership with its stakeholders which enables the formulation and implementation of the programs, projects, and activities. The collaboration and connection with the stakeholders have created successful educational space which has led to the development of better learning experience. Stakeholder engagement has ensured that learners in the City of Naga are never disregarded and are instead always at the forefront of educational efforts.

With its tagline, “NagaSerbisyong Dekalidad, NAgaPAdayon para sa MATATAG na Edukasyon”, DepEd- City of Naga has made services accessible to everybody and steered the course of academic and heuristic experience in the cause of improving and providing quality education.
